"Piano Music from Finland"
School Programs
Presenting Finnish piano music, history, geography, and student participation.
Craig Johnson offers in-school elementary programs
featuring Finnish piano music,
which may be first heard and studied
from his new CD "Piano Music from Finland".
The basic program:
-
Is a presentation-concert which lasts approximately 40 minutes.
It can also be tailored to the length of the school class
or assembly period.
-
Features geographical and historical information
and perspective about Finland and the northern European realm,
especially as it relates to composers and influences upon Finland.
-
Encourages audience participation, as page-turners,
question and answer, and give and take.
-
Can also be presented in a more formal and academic way
for older school audiences.
Mr. Johnson first presented these programs in the Irving, Texas,
school district in 1999, as part of his Finlandia Foundation
"Performer of the Year" activity.
Photos from three of the concerts,
at Lee, Schulze, and Brandenburg elementary schools,
accompany the photo page.
The liner notes of the CD itself
may serve as an abbreviated study guide.
Additional material will be sent to a teacher interested
in hosting this concert.
A study guide with supplemental learning activities has been prepared
by Maureen Trepp, a longtime Minneapolis elementary school teacher
who has collaborated with Craig Johnson
on educational matters relating to the CD.
